Not blood brothers

Rakshabandhan is a celebration of sisters and brothers. But do those who are not blood brothers share the same bond with their ‘rakhi sisters’? Are these relationships enduring or do they fade over time?

We asked some of our celebs who have a rakhi brother/sister on what they feel about this unique bond.

Arzoo Govitrikar:
When I was in school I used to tie a rakhi to a boy named Umesh. I started tying him a rakhi when I was four years old and I continued doing that every year till my tenth grade. Now we are in touch but we don’t follow the rakhi ritual. Today, we are in touch but we don’t share the same equation. Things are more formal between us. These days, I tie a rakhi only to my own brother.

Vivaan Bhatena:
My wife Nikhila's sister Divya Palat has been tying a rakhi to me since the last five years. I have already bought a gift for her. I will be presenting her a top for this Rakshabandhan. In school days too, I had a rakhi sister but that relationship ended with school. I guess she lives abroad now.

Twinkle Bajpai:
Up till now I don’t have a rakhi brother but this Rakshabandhan I’ll be tying a rakhi to actor Abhinav Kapoor (Both of them are currently seen in Kaun Jeetega Bollywood Ka Ticket). Having a rakhi brother is as good as having a biological brother. Abhinav is a very dear friend of mine who takes care of me like his little sister, so I would love to turn this friendship into a brother and sister relationship. And I hope it lasts forever.

Angad Hasija:
Yes, I have a rakhi sister. She is my relative who has been tying me a rakhi since childhood but of late we have not been able to celebrate this festival together as she lives in another city, busy in her own life. I agree that rakhi relations may not always endure but this can happen even with biological brother-sister.

Shweta Keswani:
I have a rakhi brother. I met him in the coaching classes that I used to attend when I was in my tenth grade. Since then, I have been tying him a rakhi every year. He is a well known DJ. His name is Senthil Kumar. He is the legendary actress Rekha’s nephew but I came to know this much later. Today on Rakshabandhan, I am meeting him for lunch to tie him a rakhi. After that, I will rush for my shoot. I feel if you want to maintain a relationship, you can. I have also been tying a rakhi to my father since my childhood as his sisters live in different cities and sometimes they miss sending him a rakhi but I make it a point to tie a rakhi on his wrist every year
